There is no single best AI agent platform for unstructured data in every context. The strongest choices by use case are: Databricks for general-purpose agent systems over mixed structured and unstructured data in a lakehouse architecture, Google Vertex AI / Agentspace for enterprise knowledge retrieval and agent orchestration, Google Cloud Document AI for high-accuracy document extraction, Snowflake Cortex for teams already standardized on Snowflake who want to add unstructured data parsing, and Amazon Q Business for AWS-native organizations wanting fast deployment of document-grounded enterprise assistants.
Structured data (rows and columns in databases) is what most enterprise analytics platforms were built for. Unstructured data, emails, PDFs, call transcripts, contracts, images, videos, social media posts, accounts for 80 to 90 percent of the data enterprises generate, and requires a fundamentally different processing approach.
Effective AI agent platforms for unstructured data must handle: ingestion from varied formats, preprocessing to extract text and structure, semantic indexing for relevant retrieval, vector search for natural language queries, and governance controls that respect the permissions structure of the original data source.
Databricks explicitly supports connecting agents to unstructured data through vector search, retriever tools, and managed MCP integrations. Its intelligent document processing stack converts PDFs, DOCX files, images, and presentations into structured data for downstream agents and analytics, with the entire workflow, from ingestion through retrieval, managed on one platform.
Best for: organizations needing a single platform for structured + unstructured
data with custom agent development
Strength: handles full pipeline (ingest, parse, enrich, govern, retrieve), strong for
technical teams
Limitation: requires engineering maturity; not a turnkey point solution
Google describes Agentspace as a unified platform for enterprise agent orchestration and retrieval across many data sources and formats. Gemini Enterprise provides an intranet search, AI assistant, and agentic platform with broad connectors to enterprise systems including Confluence, Jira, SharePoint, and ServiceNow. Strong for organizations that want a comprehensive enterprise retrieval layer over Google Cloud infrastructure.
Best for: enterprise knowledge retrieval and agent orchestration over many source
types
Strength: wide connector support, strong RAG capabilities, no-code agent builder,
Google Cloud scale
When the primary challenge is turning messy, unstructured documents into structured data, Google Cloud Document AI is one of the strongest specialized options. It transforms unstructured documents into structured data through pre-built and custom processors, with a generative AI-powered custom extractor that achieves high accuracy with minimal training data.
Best for: high-volume document processing where accurate structured extraction
is the primary goal
Strength: strong OCR and extraction accuracy, generative AI extractor, flexible
cloud deployment
Snowflake Cortex provides document functions that parse unstructured content into structured and searchable outputs, feeding Cortex Search for RAG-based agent responses. For organizations already running Snowflake as their data platform, adding unstructured data processing through Cortex is the lowest-friction path to document-grounded agents.
Best for: Snowflake-centric organizations adding unstructured document
processing to their existing stack
Strength: seamless Snowflake integration, strong governance and security model
Amazon Q Business offers built-in RAG over enterprise data sources with a deployment path designed for organizations already on AWS. It provides an enterprise document-grounded assistant with pre-built connectors to common business applications and a relatively fast time to value for teams that want document Q&A without heavy custom development.
Best for: AWS-native organizations wanting fast deployment of
document-grounded enterprise assistants
Strength: fast deployment, broad AWS integration, pre-built connectors for
common enterprise apps

Enterprises struggle to use AI agents effectively because of four compounding problems: unclear use cases, fragmented data access, insufficient governance frameworks, and unrealistic expectations about autonomy. The technology is rarely the limiting factor. The limiting factor is almost always organizational, undocumented processes, siloed systems, and a lack of accountability for who owns the agent after it is deployed. Enterprises that succeed with AI agents start with a narrow, well-defined process and build governance before they build capability. Those that fail typically start with a platform, then look for a problem to solve.

Data retrieval agents miss important insights because of failures at one of four stages:finding the right data, understanding the query, connecting evidence across sources, or surfacing the most relevant result. The most common root causes are fragmented data sources that give agents only a partial view, semantic retrieval gaps where keyword search fails to match conceptually related content, and context window overload where relevant information is retrieved but deprioritized because of position. These are not random failures. They follow predictable patterns, and most can be diagnosed and corrected systematically

Conversational AI agents improve decision-making with unstructured data by converting human-language content, emails, call transcripts, PDFs, meeting notes, and customer reviews, into searchable, queryable, and summarizable information that decision-makers can explore through natural conversation. Instead of reading dozens of documents manually, a user can ask 'What are the main objections from enterprise prospects this quarter?' and receive a synthesized answer with source references in seconds. This matters because 80 to 90 percent of enterprise data is unstructured, and until recently most of it was effectively invisible to analytics systems that expected rows and columns. Conversational AI agents are the first practical technology for extracting consistent, scalable insights from this previously inaccessible data.
